Go Ape!

from Tessa Thomas:

The only way is up when you're one of the Go Ape team - and several were out testing the wires, walkways and ladders last week in preparation for the public opening today (March 18th 2017) of the new Ally Pally facility. Pictured is Charlotte, a 28 year old aerialist who worked at Disneyland and Up At The O2 as well as the Orbit at the Olympic Park (80m up in the air!) before joining Go Ape. Rest assured, it's all fun to watch if you're not as at home in the air as she is...

Evening talk
Wednesday 26 April, 7.30pm
To mark a new artwork by Turner Prize winning collective Assemble at Seven Sisters Station, Art on the Underground curator Kiera Blakey will discuss the role of contemporary public art today.

Commissioned by Art on the Underground and due for completion in Summer 2017 the artwork challenges traditional notions of public art as a monument or formal sculpture. The artists have developed a shop unit that has lain derelict on the Seven Sisters Station approach for 20 years. From rebuilding the structure, to an interim use as a ceramic studio, the unit will eventually be returned to function as a commercial unit. In relation to this turn in public art, Kiera will discuss the different modes of public art today and why work like Assemble’s is more important than ever.
For more information on Art on the Underground, see: http://art.tfl.gov.uk/

Munch and Listen lunchtime talks programme
Monday 24 April, 12.15pm
Join us for our free lunchtime talk with Ian Betts, Senior Specialist (Building Materials) from MOLA
(Museum of London Archaeology).
Ian will show us the beautiful examples of various designs and types of tin-glazed (Delftware) used in London houses over 400 years. Dating from the mid-15th to early 19th century, these will include floor tiles imported from Valencia and Seville in Spain, Antwerp in Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as examples produced in London and Liverpool, made to decorate walls in these large houses. His talk will be illustrated by the many finds from the Museum of London collections. He will examine how such tiles were used and the buildings in which they can still be found, including a house in Highgate and examples (now in Bruce Castle Museum) originating from a fire-surround in Dial House, Tottenham.
Ian is the author of the book 'Tin-glazed Tiles from London' by Ian M. Betts and Rosemary J. Weinstein (Museum of London Archaeology, 2010).
All welcome.
Doors open at 12 noon. Talk begins at 12.15pm.
Bring your lunch. Refreshments available.

Munch and Listen programme: Monday 27 March, 12.15pm

Lucinda Gosling discusses the life and career of William Heath Robinson (1872-1944), one of Britain's best-loved humorous artists, who was born in Stroud Green and lived for some time in Highgate. She looks in particular at his cartoons produced during the First World War, a period that inspired him to finely hone the convoluted contraptions and absurd inventions with which he forever after became associated.

Doors open at 12 noon. Refreshments available.

Kindly supported by the Friends of Bruce Castle

Lucinda works at Mary Evans Picture Library and is author of several books on Great War illustration and cartoons, including 'Brushes & Bayonets' (Osprey, 2008), 'It's All A Bit Heath Robinson' (History Press, 2015) and 'A Better 'Ole' (History Press, 2015).

Palace Gates Residents Association gardening volunteers will be meeting for our first gardening session of 2017 on Saturday 4th March. It would be fantastic if some new people who appreciate the work that is being done would come and introduce themselves.

Hopefully you will have noticed the spring bulbs are starting to blossom - particularly in The Triangle beds; there should be a very colourful display over the next month.

The beds on Albert Road/Crescent Rise have also been set with spring bulbs and they are beginning to emerge too.  However, they have been struggling due to over healthy weed growth and also being suffocated by leaves. We have removed a quantity of leaves but the beds are really in need of more clearing and weeding and we would really appreciate as much help as you can give.

Please join us on Saturday 4th between 11a.m.-1p.m. at Albert Road/Crescent Rise junction flower beds
