The first Crouch End Literary Festival. February 23-25th, 2024. Most events are free.

A celebration of local writers, interviews, workshops, talks and performances around the written word.

Including: Over 50 writers. Over 20 events. At 8 venues: hub is Hornsey Library.

Full Festival program here: www.CrouchEndFestival.org

This year sees the first ever Crouch End Literary Festival, featuring Linda Plant, Peter Bradshaw (author and Guardian film critic), Mat Baynton (comedian, actor writer, Horrible Histories and Ghosts), Catherine West MP, Robert Peston, Steve Richards, Alan Wolfson, Dave Cohen, Rohan Candappa and a long list of local writers of all kinds – novelists, factual, script writers, comedy writers, poets, etc... From young and new to established names. (List coming soon - watch this space!)

Listen. Learn. Be inspired! Family friendly - kids welcome - they may be inspired.

Run by the Crouch End Festival team, in association with Dave Cohen, Hornsey Library, Friends of Hornsey Library, Waterstones Crouch End, All Good Bookshop, and teh intimate Space, it should be quite an event. And certainly not like most traditional literary festivals.

Spread over 3 days the hub will be in the Hornsey Library but we are also running talks, workshops and novel events across the N8 area in a variety of venues including: Waterstones / Holy Innocents / The Intimates Space (St Mary’s Tower) / Art House / The Green / Stapleton / All Good Bookshop / + various pop-up venues.

A novel favourite with the summer festival, we have Poets in the Phone Box featuring Alan Wolfson and others. Plus the Great Letter Hunt - can you find the 26 letters around Crouch End?

Plus recitals and performances in coffee shops and pop-up performance spaces.

The Crouch End Players will be performing NO QUARTER by local legend Barry Bermange, across all three nights of the festival at the Intimate Space (St Mary’s Tower) in Hornsey Village.

Fri 23, 7:30 - WURDS+MUSIC is an üF-Beat special - a night of improvised music & spoken word in the Holy Eye (Holy Innocents) featuring top writers and musicians.

We have workshops on self-publishing, and comedy writing. A talk on Dyslexic writers featuring Sam Rapp the ‘Dyslexic Poet’ and Dr Chris Arnold, dyslexic and founder of Dyversity Lab. (Did you know Agatha Christie, Yeats, Fitzgerald and Hans Christian Andersen were dyslexic?).

We hope that there is something for everyone, whatever your taste. This isn't your ordinary literary festival, it's more fun. more creative and a little more dynamic.

Beatriz Ezkieta was reading her poems written in her native Basque, and her English translations, out of various collections including her recent book of poems about commuting on the Piccadilly Line from Wood Green over many years, full of descriptions and imaginative characterisations of the people she saw, and thoughts about travelling and the people who do it ("The worn velvet of the Piccadilly Line has travelled the world from bum to bum"). She particularly notices the contradications in people's behaviour and what that suggests about them. There's a lot in her poems though they are all fairly short.

I had no idea what Basque sounds like - it is very musical, but written down it looks much harder than it sounds. Beatriz also had some very interesting things to say about language and travelling. Her parents are Basque, but didn't speak the language because it was forbidden by the Franco dictatorship while they were growing up, but her own schooling was in Basque, so in the family it became a knd of secret language between herself and her sister. (Her grandmother did speak it, mixed with other things).

The evening was organised by Clive Boutle who published Beatriz's commuting poems - the title is 'The Blue Line' and is illustrated with some of her own collages. I expect it's available at All Good Bookshop.

Les Levidow

For a long time, policy elites have been promoting false solutions for environmental problems.

In the 1990s they promoted genetically modified (GM) crops, supposedly to reduce agrochemical usage and so environmental harm from intensive agriculture. Yet their real priority was to create new markets for products and to privatise knowledge. Early protest demanded, “No patents on life!” A Europe-wide opposition campaign eventually blocked the GM agenda and created more opportunities for agroecological alternatives.

In response to climate change, policy elites devised a system of carbon-credit trading, which supposedly would incentivise decarbonisation technologies. In practice, this system has done little to reduce GHG emissions. Instead high-carbon polluters have been cheaply buying the right to pollute. Moreover, the system has facilitated more plunder of the global South, provoking much protest.

Both examples illustrate market-based false solutions, which entrench the power of elites who have created environmental problems. This recurrent pattern can be understood as techno-market fixes. Their false solutions often provoke public controversy and socially just, solidaristic alternatives. These have been developing grassroots solutions through commoning, where a solidaristic community defends commons and creates new ones. Such transformative mobilisations can fulfil the popular slogan, ‘System Change Not Climate Change’.

As can be seen from this photo of MHXR, the particular focus of these groups was defending our vanishing woodlands and threatened ancient trees, including in the streets of Haringey.

Chris Packham urged “every last person who cares” about the planet to join in.

On Sunday the weekend of demonstrations continued in a more subdued fashion, in support of the London Marathon. When the Director of the Marathon was asked on TV about disruption of the event by protesters, he instead said (video at https://twitter.com/i/status/1650159934678392833):

Global warming is so important, together, we have to take action to do things ... people should absolutely be allowed to protest ... we need to listen to each other ..."

Meanwhile, a rhinoceros-shaped being was running past ...

The last day of the weekend of demonstrations is today, which includes a procession dramatising the evils of incineration at noon. This is organised by XR Haringey who, locally, are particularly concerned about the new, huge incinerator being installed by the North London Waste Authority; lots of similar incinerators are being installed elsewhere in the country. Then lobbying MPs, finishing with 'Picketing' Parliament - i.e. not preventing people coming and going, but processing around the building. It works once a month for a couple of hours on either the triangle at the Palace Gates/Crescent Road junction, or by the Albert Road roundabout. It's sociable, and there is also the pleasure of doing something which ends up looking nice, and which people appreciate.

Many thanks to all who have helped in various ways over many years now; hopefully the recent bout of hard work will be rewarded when the spring flowering begins. Also our younger members, who have volunteered under the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, deserve a special mention for their dedication to our group.

The group will meet in February for our first session of the new year. If you are interested in joining, please let us know here (a private message to me if you like), and we will add you to the list for e-mailing details of dates.
