I wanted to alert you to an upcoming consultation on the proposal for Rhodes Ave School.

Re Rhodes Avenue officers have said as follows:
Firstly, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank you for getting in touch in regard to our School Street programme which is one part of our overall plan to improve the health of our children and tackle the climate emergency. School Streets enable parents and children to walk, cycle or scoot to and from school by reducing traffic outside schools at drop-off and pick-up times.
With 38 already operating in Haringey, and over 800 across London, we know they can create spaces outside schools with lower traffic levels and improved air quality, while supporting increased levels of active travel amongst pupils. These outcomes help improve children's health and wellbeing and contribute to our wider objective of reducing road danger around schools.
To recap on the points I mentioned:
- Rhodes Avenue Primary School is included within the borough-wide School Streets Plan, which was adopted in2021 and updated in 2023. It is currently identified within the final delivery phase (Phase 8). However, the proposal remains at a very early stage.
- The July update to ward members was intended as an early indication that the location is in the programme, rather than notice of an imminent implementation.
- The anticipated process will consist of two main stages. Initially there would be discussions with the school. This would then be followed by ‘informal consultation’ (Stage A consultation) in which the Council would share an initial design and seek feedback from residents and other affected parties.
- Subject to decision of the Stage A consultation, a statutory consultation (Stage B consultation) would then be undertaken through proposed traffic orders. Any formal objections received at that stage would be considered by the Council before a final decision is made on whether to proceed.
- At present, informal consultation is expected to begin in early 2027, although this remains indicative and will depend on other project dependencies.
- If brought forward, the scheme would be designed around the particular circumstances of Rhodes Avenue and all issues raised would be considered through the design and consultation process.
- It may also be helpful to clarify that School Street do not operate in the same way as an LTN. School Streets only apply for short periods (typically 1 hour) at school drop-off and pick-up times, on weekdays during term time; typically they are in operation for less than 5% of the year. All of our School Streets have a range of (free) exemptions available for motorists – this includes residents and business as well as Blue Badge holders who require access.
- Haringey has delivered 38 School Streets, which have been associated with increased active travel to school, reduced pollution and reduced levels of traffic around schools. However, the Rhodes Avenue proposal has not yet reached the point where a specific design, operating hours or final access arrangements can be confirmed.
