After the open meeting on 24 February at the Alexandra Park Library, Supporters of Alexandra Park Library (SAPL) are urging Haringey residents who value their libraries to email Haringey Councillors ahead of the budget vote on Monday 4 March.

Haringey Council will vote to cut library budgets 15% from the libraries' current budget in 2024/25. SAPL and Friends of Reading and Education (FORE) are urging councillors to work with these groups and the community on how to keep the libraries open and at the heart of our communities.

Join us in sending this message to the councillors before they vote on 4 March 2024.

Suggested Instructions:

Below is some suggested text. There are places in italicized bold print that need you to personalize.

Then you can copy and paste the following email addresses of all the councillors (you can do it as a group and highlight all of them at once) and put in your address line of your email and send all councillors the same email at the same time.

Dear Haringey Councillors

On Monday you will vote on the 2024/25 Budget for Haringey. You have already heard from Friends of Reading and Education in person at the deputation on 6 February about our concerns about cutting the libraries’ budget.

Before you vote, I want to tell you why libraries are so important to me.

WRITE HERE WHY YOU CARE ABOUT THE LIBRARY IN A PERSONAL CAPACITY. KEEP IT SHORT

You will vote to cut libraries’ budgets by 15% of their current budget this year. This is a tragedy.

Libraries are much more than places to check out books. They are part of our community and service all demographics through a wide range of activities that address all sorts of social challenges that when neglected become larger expenses with bigger negative externalities.

Alexandra Park Library is just getting its feet under it after being closed for its extensive refurbishment. The library is beautiful now, but people must re-acquaint themselves after its long closure. You will be hurting the community again and deterring more usage if you decrease the operating hours at Haringey libraries.

Please can you request that the Senior Manager with responsibility for the library service outlines their community engagement strategy within the next 4 weeks AND ask them to publicize this widely so concerned residents can get involved and help to find solutions.

 Best regards,

YOUR NAME & ADDRESS
