Does anyone know where the idea has come from, to re-name the Albert Road Rec the Oliver Tambo Recreation Ground? I hear it's on the agenda for tonight's Labour Party Alexandra Branch meeting.

I've heard that the cost of doing this will be c £250/-. If so, I'd have thought that Haringey had more pressing things to spend money on, however important a figure Mr Tambo may be..
Hi, for the time being is a proposal. We Councillors had a meeting with the Leader of the Council, Cllr Ejiofor, Pavilion, FARGG, BGDRA, and representative of APS where this was discussed.
The Council would like to do something to remember and celebrate the apartheid struggle and thought of follow on from the unveiling of the Oliver Tambo statue with the renaming of the Park in his nam. There is also an idea to have other initiatives and a summer festival. I have asked for clarification around costs and funding as it seems that what is in the Albert Rec Park Management Plan is not accurate.
The would be a consultation around June so local residents and users of the park will have the opportunity to see the plan and have their say.
Is still in the early stages and will let you know when there is more...
As someone who had no idea of the anti-apartheid connection with the area, I think it's very fitting his statue is here but agree that changing the name of the Rec would be confusing and counter-productive.
I saw it mentioned on Nextdoor a bit back. I did a cursory look at the FARRG website or facebook to see if they mentioned it but didn't notice anything. Whilst Oliver Tambo is a person to be celebrated (and has two statues in the park), personally I would rather the rec ground keep its name as it's a much more useful description of what and where it is.
I've never heard it mentioned! Seems a strange idea to me.
