Beatriz Ezkieta was reading her poems written in her native Basque, and her English translations, out of various collections including her recent book of poems about commuting on the Piccadilly Line from Wood Green over many years, full of descriptions and imaginative characterisations of the people she saw, and thoughts about travelling and the people who do it ("The worn velvet of the Piccadilly Line has travelled the world from bum to bum"). She particularly notices the contradications in people's behaviour and what that suggests about them. There's a lot in her poems though they are all fairly short.

I had no idea what Basque sounds like - it is very musical, but written down it looks much harder than it sounds. Beatriz also had some very interesting things to say about language and travelling. Her parents are Basque, but didn't speak the language because it was forbidden by the Franco dictatorship while they were growing up, but her own schooling was in Basque, so in the family it became a knd of secret language between herself and her sister. (Her grandmother did speak it, mixed with other things).

The evening was organised by Clive Boutle who published Beatriz's commuting poems - the title is 'The Blue Line' and is illustrated with some of her own collages. I expect it's available at All Good Bookshop.

Parklets in Myddleton Roadhttps://alexandraparkneighbours.org.uk/forum/parklets-in-myddleton-road2023-10-21T16:58:33.000Z2023-10-21T16:58:33.000ZAnnabel Gregoryhttps://alexandraparkneighbours.org.uk/members/AnnabelGregory

The Bohem Taproom in Myddleton Road (which sells Czech beer brewed by the Bohem brewery in Tottenham) has used a parking space in the road outside it as an outdoor seating area since the pandemic (see pic taken in August). There was no room for social distancing inside their tiny premises, so they were licensed by the Council to mark off this area with the red and white plastic barriers used elsewhere for extending footways. It is an inviting space - with wood-topped beer barrels as tables, chairs, stools and potted plants around the edge. Renaissance Cafe was also licensed to mark off an existing parking space for tables and chairs.

La Bottega restaurant (which has already had tables set out lengthways down the pavement on occasional warm days this summer) is going to get a licence to do the same, and the licences for all three will be made permanent (the plastic barriers replaced with something more attractive). Other businesses have also asked for them, but the Council said there was no budget for more than three. The soon-to-be re-incarnated Step pub/cafe (now community owned) persuaded them to hold a consultation to enable a fair distribution of parklets, and the results of this have yet to be made public.

America Awaits Us, My Lovelyhttps://alexandraparkneighbours.org.uk/forum/america-awaits-us-my-lovely2023-09-13T16:48:17.000Z2023-09-13T16:48:17.000ZChristopher Owenhttps://alexandraparkneighbours.org.uk/members/ChristopherOwen

I’m very pleased - good news!

AMERICA AWAITS US, MY LOVELY and Other Stories has been REISSUED.
