With TfL limiting passenger numbers to 15% of the usual volume, there are concerns about how those who usually get to work by public transport are going to travel. Some can drive to work - but this increases air pollution, makes social distancing more difficult, and carries the potential for traffic gridlock. With 40% of car trips in London going less than 2miles, other options for some of these could be possible if streets were made safer for walking and cycling. A broad definition of Alexandra Park seems called for – for example, some of the rat-running in Dukes Avenue carries on into Palace Gates, as does rat-running in Winton Avenue, and affects traffic in Durnsford Road. So measues in any of these neighbourhoods should benefit each other, while having some negative impacts on others. So we need an integrated scheme that maximises benefits and minimises negative impacts in this area (as also in the borough as a whole) to discuss with the Council. We are not traffic experts, but we do know local conditions!

  • Looking forward to the first AP Low Traffic Group meeting (which can't come soon enough!).
    I am also organising - as agreed at The Sweet Tree streets survey meeting - a 'safe cycle' ride for anyone who would like to cycle but is inexperienced or timorous, or cyclists wanting to accompany those. This has been delayed for maybe obvious reasons but would be best soon, before traffic returns to 'normal' ie heavy, and we can still cycle in a group.
    Given that 2 major contributing factors to Covid19 have been identified as pollution and obesity, cycling (and walking) addresses these directly, cheaply and efficiently. Meanwhile, lest it needs clarifying, to cycle you don't need to be young or fit or brave: you simply need vital organs and four limbs - that's it!
    This position in no way implies those who drive or are unfit are in some way culpable. Among the obstacles to car-free travel are inadequate safe infrastructure for non-motor trips, unhelpful messages from the fitness industry, political support for driving and misinformation from the motor industry.
    Let's, those of us who can, use our bodies to move and free up road-space and public transport for those - including the elderly and disabled - who genuinely need them, getting our selves and our environments healthier in the process while supporting the more vulnerable.

    The number of people interested in the 'safe cycle' ride is increasing but feel free to note here if you are interested and/or email the low-traffic group as above who can pass on messages to me if and when necessary.

  • Hi would it be possible to include roads like Park Avenue N22 which are just as close to Ally Pally but suffer terribly with traffic

    • Yes, definitely - I think Park Avenue is part of the same traffic 'neighbourhood'
