I was about to investigate whether these chimney sweeps were still in business, having used them several years ago (when they were very amenable and reasonably-priced) and needing to get the chimney swept before we stuff insulation up it. Discovered that they are not only surviving but being innovative, returning to the mode of transport of their forebears: 10831361877?profile=RESIZE_400x

  • Josh the chimney sweep told me he appreciates being able to ride home safely everyday in/on his cargo bike up Palmerston Road - through the Bowes and Bounds low traffic neighbourhoods.

    • The email informing me of this comment had "Except when it ..." at the end, following "neighbourhoods". Did you delete this? If so, why? and what was the "..."?

    • Ah! I see what has happened. You received an automated email notification that I had posted a reply, because you had previously posted something on that thread. However, it looks as if the system sent it while I was in the middle of editing the post - !

So, yes, I ws deleting a sentence that said that he used a van during the snowy week, mainly because there was no easy way of defrosting the windscreen of his cargo bike. I imagine also that the only partly-cleared snow was also a major problem, as also the extreme cold!

    • The wintry thing that really IS a problem for a cyclist is a totally frozen wet road surface WITHOUT any snow on top of it for the wheels to grip on. Unless the cyclist has skills akin to that of a tightrope walker, heshe'll come a cropper for sure.

    • Yes indeed

  • How does that work? Do they move the brush with their pedals, using a mechanism that would put W. Heath Robinson to shame?

    • Why yes, of course! I'm sure Prof. Branestawm must have created some gadget involving chimney sweeps brushes...

But no, I'm afraid this is just a means of transport for Mr. Firkins and his brushes, dust sheets and whatever else - a cargo bike that looks a bit like a little van. I saw it going up Park Avenue (Wood Green) - a good way of exercising, were it not for the surrounding air pollution.

    • Walking is pretty well as vulnerable to pollution as cycling is, and it was a pedestrian thrusting a big box in my way - in Park Avenue, as it happens - that put paid to my carefree cycling days, not motorists - HE's unlikely to be found before that day.
