Seed and plant swap is a fantastic idea! I'd join.
Hollyhocks - I can't get them to grow in my garden at all. They love poor soil, sun and dry conditions (were brought to Europe from Turkey by the crusaders). They can thrive in the northern climate if given plenty of light and the summer is not wet (the stalks will rot if too much rain). My landlady in Denmark had them growing out of the cracks between the pavement and the south facing wall of the house (10 cm width at best) and they were splendid - up to 7-8 feet (she treated them as annuals and reseeded every year). She claimed that they loved iron pigment seeping into the soil from the facade (Danes still repaint their old houses with natural pigments; iron gives orange colour). A few rusty nails in an earthenware pot filled with half general compost half grit (erring on the side of grit) is what I plan to try this spring. Will post here if successful.
Yes, I would love some hollyhock seeds too - not sure what I have to swap, but will have a look. We could investigate having a seed swap/plant sale event in AP Library - Jan Williams, chair of SAPL (supporters of AP Library), thought it might be possible

Hi Kirsty - I would love some hollyhock seeds - though so far I've not been successful in getting them to take. Though I understand once they do you're off. when would be a good time to collect - I'm pretty flexible.
