Is boiler insurance worth it?

Advice? My boiler insurance (Domestic & General) doesn't cover problems resulting from sludge buildup. However, it seems that sludge buildup is always given as the reason for boiler problems. Is it worth having boiler insurance if the insurance doesn't cover the problems my boiler actually has? If not, should I get some private engineer to do an annual service? Any recommendations?

  • Thank you all for your advice!!!

  • We used to get our Vaillant boiler serviced every year (more or less) by Steve of Vaillant Boiler Repairs tel. 07770 580803. He's very considerate and helpful.

  • My 2001 combi boiler was a recommended Vaillant. The same heating engineer replaced it with a Viessmann in 2016, saying he finds the latter is now the most reliable brand on the market.
    • "Snap! We also moved from a Vaillant to a Viessmann. Your heating engineer isn't called Alec Morrow, by any chance?!"

    • No - Robert Nosowicz. Sounds as though they may be of the same vintage and calibre.

  • I agree with Julia. We've never had boiler insurance or a maintenance contract. The man who installed it said that it does not need annual services either (he has great faith in it!) - he's serviced it 2 or 3 times since it was installed nearly 7 years ago, and I don't think we've had any problems with it, apart from needing some thermostat settings changed. It's a Viessmann.

  • I have never had boiler insurance nor felt 'caught out' by problems cropping up with my boilers. Nor do I have an annual service. What I do have is a qualified heating engineer. I paid them to install a good quality new boiler when I bought this property in 2001. I paid them several hundred pounds a few years later for a power flush as a preventative against sludge buildup. The stuff that came out was impressively vile. Years ago when I lived elsewhere I used to have an annual boiler/heating check from the same private heating engineer who 'did' all my neighbours. That worked well too - he rarely needed to do anything expensive to fix our heating systems. IMO it is better value for money to find a recommended and Gas Safe qualified heating engineer and follow their advice than to pay insurance premiums.
