When a planning application is submitted, the Council only notifies the immediate neighbours. So it is very useful to be able to check planning applications in your neighbourhood from the Council's interactive map (I've only recently discovered this):
You will need to zoom in by clicking on the plus sign, and the green rectangles (or similar shape) indicate the properties for which planning applications have been submitted. Click on a green rectangle for details.

Did you know you can sign on the Haringey website to receive details of planning applications within 1km of your address? I signed up for this a couple of years ago. For the first 6 months I only seemed to be sent details of tree works for some reason, but now it seems to be working efficiently and sending me details of planning applications near me..
This is the form to fill in https://eforms.secure.haringey.gov.uk/ufs/PA_REGISTER.eb?ebd=0&...
the map on the haringay planning site used to be Ok but lately I have found it only gives me details of applications regarding work on trees not buildings, despite knowing applications must have been submitted with work now underway in my direct area.
Ah, it still shows current applications for building works when I click on it. If the work you refer to is 'now underway', maybe the planning application(s) has been accepted, so is no longer current?
