Families in Alexandra Park have been raising concerns about the lack of cooling‑off water spaces this summer, so I asked the Council for an update.
Priory Park’s paddling pool is still under refurbishment after the damaged liner was removed in July. Concrete assessments and approvals are now complete, with works expected to start early September. The Council says they’ll extend the season so kids don’t miss out.
Finsbury Park’s Splash Play was closed due to a jammed activator switch, with repairs planned for w/c 10 August.
Right now, only Bruce Castle and Lordship Rec paddling pools are fully open, plus Finsbury Park Splash Play once repairs finish.
The Council isn’t expanding splash play facilities due to high annual running costs; £45k per year across just three pools, from a borough‑wide hard‑assets budget that averages £202 per park.
They are investing £200k NCIL funding to upgrade all three paddling pools next year, and Haringey is part of the GLA Cool Spaces network, with 10 local cooling sites and more being added.
Our kids deserve safe, free ways to cool down especially during these heatwaves. I’ll keep pushing for better provision across the borough. - Cllr AJ Egemonye.
