It has been suggested by an APN member that it would be useful to be able to share rarely or infrequently-used equipment - such as wallpaper steamers, preserving pans for making jam, and even lawnmowers.  We will have to work out a way of dealing with faults which occur when somebody other than the owner is using some equipment - any ideas?

Anyway, I thought I would kick things off by offering our wallpaper steamer - not much can go wrong with that, hopefully ...

  • We also have one of those long handled electric hedge trimmers for high hedges and are happy to loan it. Beware it is heavy.

  • I have drain rods should anyone need to clear a blockage - it's the sort of thing that you don't need until you need, but when you do need you really need!

Also a Jigsaw (of the cutting not assembling variety) - it's 500 watts power if memory serves correctly; it was pretty cheap.

    • That's generous! We must work out a way of dealing with faults. I had forgotten that so many offers of equipment to lend had been made ...

    • To be honest Annabel I would probably be happy to take the risk as neither of these items are high value or used regularly by me.

However I think I probably would want to see either proof of address or drop it round myself to confirm that it's really being lent to a neighbour (in case some nefarious individual came across this website and decided to take advantage of peoples' good nature).

For a higher value item I suppose I might be more hesitant to lend it without a deposit but again it strikes me that the risk is rather low.

    • Good thinking!

Indijana, your hedge trimmer sounds great.

  • As a roofer I have plenty of ladders should anyone need one to borrow
    • Hi Stuart, is this offer still going?!

  • We have a preserving pan, plus a garden shredder we would be happy to share. Also, an assortment of tools and garden tools and a step ladder.

Perhaps people should also post what items they would like to borrow. As for the faults developing while a piece borrowed: we used to be the only people with an electric hedge trimmer in the neighbourhood and in years of lending it  we only had one bad experience; so I would happily lend on trust. Maybe, a deposit could be agreed that would cover repairs. Accidents happen.

    • Good ideas - a deposit for electrical goods at least would be good.

  • I have a Bread-maker someone can borrow for a while.  I used it for quite a while, but it has been said that it is the piece of kitchen equipment that is often least used by the owner!  Still, I know a pair that wake up to a new loaf routinely and they swear by one!
