Dear all - some of you may remember that following requests from residents I included in the Highway Plan 23-24 proposal the request for a zebra crossing in Palace Gate Road, either at the junction with Crescent Road where the bus stop is,  or further up close to the junction with Bedford Road. Following the necessary checks and survey a statutory consultation was carried out in July. I am pleased to report that after evaluating the results the zebra crossing will be installed close to the junction with Bedford Road, between numbers 9/10 of PGR. You can read more about the decision and all relevant documentation here: https://www.minutes.haringey.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?Id=3145

The works will start on 17 February 2025, and should take one week to complete, weather permitting. There will be a temporary road closure and parking will be prohibited adjacent to the construction works. There will be advanced warning signage to be erected on site prior to the works commencing, so hopefully you will see some going up soon, if not please let me know, and residents should start receiving notification letters from next week.

Please note that there may be instances when you cannot access and exit your property during the execution of these works. If required, please contact the operatives on site who will assist you where possible, with consideration of the safety of the public and the operatives, or email Frontline.Consultation@haringey.gov.uk with ‘Proposed Zebra Crossing on Palace Gates Road’ in your email header, and cc me in as well (alessandra.rossetti@haringey.gov.uk) so I can follow up. Thank you!

  • Such great news - thanks, Alessandra! This will be hugely transformational for the area - people put right at the centre of things. Zebras, taking just a week to put in, can have a lifetime of impact. Thank you!

  • That's great news, Alessandra, thanks for your work on this!

Any news about the installation of a zebra crossing on Alexandra Park Road N22 by Talbot road, that was promised? It is really dangerous crossing the road to the traffic island on the brow of the hill because the oncoming traffic is obscured by parked cars (on the Talbot road side of the road). When my daughter was at APS she found it nerve-wracking crossing here every day - and lots of other schoolchildren cross here too.

    • Hello Annabel - There has been a consultation and it had mixed responses from the residents as there would have been several parking space removed and suggested other locations. In addition it was mentioned that possibly even the 184 may have not been able to stop any longer and this created even more objections to the proposal. Eventually Haringey come back to say that it would have been possible for buses to stop on the zigzag lines behind the crossing but they would have needed to discuss with Transport for London. So nothing happened in the end. I will meet with some of the residents there shortly and ask again if views have changed.

    • Oh sorry, thanks for the info. I must have assumed that the eminently sensible proposal was going ahead! I find it incredible that the safety of schoolchildren walking a few metres to their schools should be compromised by the desires of a few residents for parking space near their homes.

The 184 bus does not have a bus stop there, in the sense of an area demarcated on the road for it. It is supposed to be 'Hail and Ride', but trying to hail a bus rarely works! I understand that when the bus route was first introduced, Haringey decided not to have proper bus stops because of the expected opposition from local car owners not wanting to lose parking spaces (I don't think there was a consultation?). Some of the virtual bus stops have more recently had timetables fixed on the nearest lamp post (if there is one nearby). It is still a major problem, however, for people who do not live in the area to work out where the buses are going to stop - they have to ask a local resident!

That is great if you will meet with some of the residents to discuss this - I hope the group will include many people living in the road. I cross over there (at the traffic island) several times a week. Many people living in Valance Road also catch the bus here, so need to cross the road.

    • I am told that it was a former ward councillor, Nigel Scott, who said that Haringey decided to have a Hail and Ride scheme rather than proper bus stops because of expected opposition (obviously TfL must also have been involved in the decision).
