A traffic survey starts 7th October at the Durnsford Road zebra crossing, as part of a review into whether a signalled crossing is needed.
With Alexandra Park School in the adjacent O R Tambo Rec, a steady stream of students and park users, and near misses already reported to the council, we hope the data supports stronger safety measures.
In July 2026, I requested that the traffic island which was removed by the council be restored to make this crossing safer for pedestrians including parents with prams and wheelchair users. The council's argument was that the 1.2m island did not meet the recommended 2.0m minimum and that the road width did not allow for a larger island leaving removal as the only option. I have challenged this position by pointing out that according to the government's guidance, 1200m is the recognised minimum not a disqualifying width. Additionally similar sized islands in other parts of the same stretch of road and across the ward weren't removed. The goal is to make our roads safer for all. 🚸
