From David10961983496?profile=RESIZE_400x:

I attach three photos of an overhanging tree and foliage on Bedford Road N22. It presents a real hazard to all pedestrians, but particularly to the visually impaired like myself. Does anyone know who is responsible for the upkeep of this plant, and would you be able to forward this message and photos to them, please?

  • Great work Michael! Thank you!

Knowing how phenomenally busy you have been lately and assuming (wrongly, it appears) that the councillors would get a quicker response, I did not bother you with it. My bad. If you want something done ask the busiest person around.

The Council are responsible for the pavements though. We have had protruding foliage problems on that corner of Bedford Road for two plus decades and every time it got bad we alerted our councillors. It rarely did get bad as the councilors kept an eye on all such spots in the ward during their survey walks - your mum did them frequently in the growing season when she was our councillor, and would knock on the doors of all home owners whose hedges needed trimming offering to bring her son (you) to trim them if they were unable to. She volunteered you, I remember, for our gardening projects and any other community work that needed heavy lifting.

Since the Highways these days pay no attention to either the residents or the councillors, what a good thing we have active community groups like Friends of the Station.

  • Just catching up on this, much later. David got in touch with the Friends of the Station, I showed it to our contacts and GTR got Network Rail to remove it.

Council Highways fairly hopeless, and this is NR responsibility, so just drop us a line at friendsofallypallystation@gmail.com and we'll sort it.

Reminder: some people think we only do flowers etc, but we are a Rail User Group, so represent passengers and locals in all service and otherwise more prosaic issues. Use us, and we'll get stuff done.

    • Great work, Michael, you obviously have the right contacts!

And great news that the Friends are taking these sort of problems on as a Rail User Group. (Now we need a Bus User group ...)

  • Great work Alessandra.

  • David, many thanks for flagging this and to everyone else for their comments and suggestions. I have raised it with Haringey Council and mentioned as well it could be Network Rail responsibility. All comments below apply and in addition to the link in Alex's reply there is also an app, Love Clean Street, where is possible to raise reports: https://www.haringey.gov.uk/contact/report-it/our-haringey, but as Indijana says it's also good for Councillors to be aware and be able to follow up.

  • Oops, apologies Alex and Annabel; I have not seen your posts

    • The more the merrier, Indijana!

  • The Council are responsible for keeping the pavements passable. A message to one of the councillors (Alessandra Rosetti or Sarah Elliot) will get the ball rolling. That will elicit a quicker response than if you contact the Council directly.

The railtrack owners should ensure the vegetation on the banks is kept in order, but you do not need to contact them yourself as the Council will inform them if they need to prune or pollard the trees.

It is the ivy that is the main problem. Friends of the Ally Pally station do prune the protruding ivy as part of their maintenance of the Bedford Rd Gardens. But that is not enough as the the bulk of the ivy is out of reach.

    Hope this helps.

  • Yes this is actually much more of an obstruction than it appears from the photos. It is mainly a mass of ivy hanging from a branch of a tree growing on the bank of the railway cutting.  Just cutting down the hanging ivy would probably sort it out.

I would think the responsible owner is Network Rail, since it's their tree, but I don't know what sort of response you get by contacting them. The Council are responsible for making sure the pavements are not obstructed, so presumably could tell Network Rail to do it, just like they tell private residents. You can report it to the Council online at this link from one of the options down the page.

  • If I'm thinking of the right section of the road, I imagine this must be above the railway, so would belong to Network Rail or Great Northern? Or maybe it's the Council's responsibility, if it is hanging over the pavement ...
