Stay well this winter

Cold weather can be seriously bad for our health. There are several things you can do, however, to keep you and your family well this winter.

Get your flu jab

The flu jab is free if you’re aged 65 or over, or if you have a long-term health condition. If you have young children or are the main carer of an older or disabled person you may also be eligible. It’s safe and the best way to stay protected from the flu virus.

Children can receive their vaccination as a nasal spray. Adults can get the vaccine via their GP or at many local pharmacies.  Find out more: www.nhs.uk/staywell

See a pharmacist early

At the first sign of winter illness, even if it’s just a cough or cold, get help from your pharmacist. Don’t wait until it gets more serious. The sooner you get advice the better. Find your nearest pharmacy: www.nhs.uk / 0300 311 22 33.

Evening and weekend appointments with a GP or Nurse

If you are feeling unwell, you can also book an appointment to see a GP or Nurse in the evening or on the weekend at one of Haringey’s primary care hubs.

Appointments are available:

  • 6:30pm-8:30pm on weekdays
  • 8:00am-8:00pm at the weekend

To make an appointment, you can call your own GP practice during normal business hours or call 0330 053 9499 during the hub opening hours. The hubs are also open on public holidays.

NHS 111

If you do need help when your GP surgery or pharmacy is closed, dial 111. NHS 111 provides medical advice and can direct you to the right service for your needs. It is free to call and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

NHS Choices also has lots of handy tips that can help you and your family stay well during the cold season. Find out more: www.nhs.uk/winterhealth
