Traffic, roads, public transport

Summary of some points made in our recent Neighbourhood Survey Workshop on Traffic:

 
POINTS OF CONCERN:
Air Pollution. Motorised Traffic. Lorries/HGVs causing noise, damage to roads and potentially houses, and pollution. Far too many motorised vehicles on the roads. Lack of safe space and Cycle Infrastructure for Cyclists. No cycle lanes or bike hangars. No balance between space for private motorised traffic and space for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users.
Pedestrians: Dangerous to cross roads.. Children, not safe to walk/skate due to traffic on roads. Lack of quality of life. Climate Emergency.
Overspill of traffic from nearby Alexandra Palace events such as fireworks etc. Alexandra Park has too many cars going through, too much car parking, and no safe space for cyclists on the road.
No controlled parking zone in Victoria Road etc.
No Pollution monitors (esp in Palace Gates/Bedford road junction near bridge where traffic builds up massively in rush hour etc.).
Motorised Traffic in Crescent Road, PGR and APR/Durnsford road is a nightmare (APR/Durnsford about 1700 motorised vehicles per day, up by 100 per day every year since 2010). Rat runs. No cycle lanes, cycle hubs and measures to restrict speed. Junction of APR/PGR dangerous.
We want AP to become a LTN because this have proved successful in Waltham Forest and Ghent (see LTN crib sheet: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1W1hhJjXimoHplOQFVHtoA9IGlsSxOE-dTPywZCmIWTU/edit  )

PROPOSALS
One Way Streets: emphatically rejected as it would cause increased speeds, not safe for cycling, pedestrians not safe to cross these roads
Humps:  Not in favour, as they cause noise and damage. 
Raised tables: Yes, they may work at entrances to roads, but ideally in conjunction with other measures set out in Low Traffic Neighbourhood Scheme (LTN).We would definitely like raised tables and blended crossings for cyclists and pedestrians - perhaps with planters - in Victoria Road at junction with Crescent Road.
Narrowing/restricting access: Yes if it is proven restricts traffic (filters?), ideally in conjunction with other LTN measures.  It would be great to restrict traffic except for residents or those needing access (carers, emergency services etc.)
Planters, bollards: Yes, they have proved effective to slow down and impede motorised traffic. Ideally in conjunction with other LTN measures.  PGR - emergency road - will restricted traffic measures be allowed?
ANPR: Automated Number Plate Recognition: Emphatic Yes, as long as it allows visitors/carers etc. to also have access.
Restricted left/right turns: potentially good idea if it restricts traffic but we don't know enough about how - or where - it would work to restrict motorised through-traffic
Side entry treatments - yes (for example in Victoria Road at Crescent Road end)
Physical barrier - yes where possible - in conjunction with other LTN measures
Banned traffic manoeuvres - Yes, in favour
 
NOT DISCUSSED
Bus gates: - may be good idea for road running through Alexandra Park, to restrict through traffic and motorised traffic
Main road cycle tracks:  Could be great on APR/Durnsford and PGR 
Pocket parks
Segregated or marked cycle lanes
Bike hangars/cycle hubs - Cycle infrastructure is key to redressing the balance between motorised vehicles and other road users

  • Thanks for this very detailed list, Gudrun. Is it a list of points made in your subgroup, or in the meeting as a whole? In the latter, there were some varying approaches to the issues.
