Following concerns raised by residents living near the Golf Course Allotments here in Alexandra Park Ward, including a vulnerable neighbour, I made enquiries with the Council. Here’s the update:

Current rules: Bonfires are banned on all Council allotment sites from 1 April to 30 September. The site association also limits burning further, to the first Saturday of each month from October to March (six times a year).

Complaints: The service receives roughly one informal complaint a year about bonfires here. No formal complaints or Member Enquiries about smoke have been logged in the last five years. If you’re affected, please do report it so the true picture is on record.

Alternatives: The Council promotes composting and recycling of green waste, and some sites arrange rubbish collections for non-compostable items.

Next steps: The Council will consult the site association on how many tenants light bonfires, how many complaints they receive, and what else could be done to reduce burning. The concerns I raised will also be passed on so the association can consider extra local restrictions.

I’ll share any further news as I get it. Have a safe Guy Fawkes Night! 🔥
