31298265470?profile=RESIZE_710xUpdate on vibrations and speeding on the N22 section of Alexandra Park Road

Many of you have raised concerns about vibrations felt in homes near the road hump, and about vehicles, particularly buses and HGVs, not slowing down. Following my enquiry to the Council (ref. MEM/8873), I now have an update from the Head of Highways & Traffic.

Speed surveys start Monday 9th November
Automatic traffic counters (ATCs) will be installed on Alexandra Park Road for 9 days from Monday 9th November 2026. They will measure how well the 20mph limit is being followed and how fast vehicles are approaching the road hump.

If speeds are found to be too high, the Council will consider extending the ramps of the hump to create a shallower gradient, which should help reduce vibration in nearby homes.

Buses
TfL will be informed about the concerns relating to buses, and asked to pass them on to the operators of the 184 route so drivers are reminded to take the humps at an appropriate speed.

What the Council says about the hump itself

  • It is about 8m from the nearest building line. Department for Transport research found that on London Clay, as on Alexandra Park Road, even hairline cracking shouldn’t occur unless a hump is within 2m of a home.
  • It is 75mm high, the Council’s standard and within the legal range of 25mm to 100mm.
  • A recent inspection of the hump and the road around it found no defects and no vibrations.
  • The Council does not carry out vibration testing inside properties near road humps.

Where the Council says it can’t act

  • I asked about signs telling large vehicles to slow down. The Council says national traffic sign regulations don’t permit them.
  • I also requested for fixed speed cameras and the council advised that they're generally the responsibility of TfL and Met Police. Installation is subject to meeting specific collision, casualty and speed criteria.
  • The Council says enforcing the speed limit is a matter for the Metropolitan Police, not the Council.

If you’ve experienced vibrations or seen vehicles speeding, please get in touch with the time of day and where you are on the road. It helps build the evidence and strengthens the case for action.

This update is primarily for the N22 section of Alexandra Park Road. I'm mindful that those on the N10 section of Alexandra Park Road from Albert Road all the way to the end of Colney Hatch Lane are facing similar problems and a separate enquiry will now be raised on their behalf.
