How nice to see Ally Pally Station back working as it used to - with the gate on the footbridge open, the oyster card readers on the platforms working, and the footbridge open to both train passengers and pedestrians going to/from Wood Green. This in spite (or may be because) of the neighbourhood being invaded by vikings, walking traffic cones and other such peculiarities attending the annual Darts tournament at the Palace. We met them coming back last night about 11pm from Jazz at Karamel.

  • I was present on behalf of the Friends at a meeting with GTR and two Labour councillors Liz and James. The GTR representative confirmed that the gate would be opened during major events at the Palace, and for half an hour in the mornings. I'm afraid it might be a tad optimistic to expect them to renege on their plans, now the barriers are installed.

Short term silver lining approach: bit more exercise, more pass through the foyer as a communal space, and when we've got the footbridge redecorated it will be a nice extra minute's walk.

Long-term prospects: the bridge is due to have lifts installed and be thoroughly developed when the line is connected to the Thameslink route in a couple of years. At that point, barriers at the Bedford Road end - indeed, possibly a foyer building such as there was decades ago, may be on the cards.

    • Sounds a little like, they open the gate when they want to and take no notice of the locals....

    • Now there's some good news - so instead of closing the whole bridge to pedestrians as well as the gate, they are going to just open the gate during major events?  Thanks, Michael, I think that's great (for the moment).

And there's something else I didn't know - 'a foyer building as there was decades ago' - !  yes, that's what we need ...
