The Cinnamon Trust is a nationwide charity which connects elderly people with volunteers who can assist them in caring for their pets - e.g. taking a dog out for walks, or fostering a cat or dog whilst the owner is in hospital.
More help is needed locally - for example, volunteer dog walkers - so I am posting this to see whether anyone would be interested. It could be once a week - anything helps. You get some exercise, it helps the owner, and the dog has fun! There must be lots of people out there who can't have a dog, but would love to take a dog for a walk or temporarily foster a dog or cat.
It's easy to apply, it's just some paperwork and once you're registered as a volunteer, you will be contacted by the charity to see if you can help where a need arises near you - you can say no if you can't help at the time.
Here is a volunteer registration form
The more people who apply to be volunteers, the better - then if an elderly person needs help with a pet near you, there's a pool of potential people to help.
More volunteers are needed nationwide so please spread the word to encourage more people to become volunteers.
If you don't have time to volunteer, please consider becoming a member of the charity for £10 a year.
If you know an elderly person or terminally ill person who needs help with a pet, they can get in touch with the Cinnamon Trust. Or maybe an elderly person is worried about what will happen to their pet when they are no longer here or perhaps go into a residential care home - if an elderly person registers with them as a member for £5 a year, they can ensure long term care for their pet as The Cinnamon Trust arranges foster care. Arrangements are made between elderly owners and the Trust well in advance, so owners do have peace of mind in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future and an emergency pet profile card.
