Last week, I was invited to attend the “Construkt” graduation event to help present certificates to the brilliant young people who took part in the very first Construkt construction and engineering programme in Haringey.
Empowering young people with the skills and confidence to build meaningful careers is essential. When we fail to do so, we create long‑term social costs. That is why youth employment and skills development remains one of my core priorities both as councillor and in my career.
The #Construkt programme, delivered by Serious About Youth (SAY), offered five days of practical construction career education and STEM activities for 16–25 year olds. From sessions with Design Managers and BIM Engineers to site tours, hands‑on workshops, employability training, tender presentations, CV support and networking with local employers, the week gave young people real insight into the industry and meaningful pathways into construction.
I made sure to promote this opportunity to Alexandra Palace to host the graduation but this didn’t materialise this time but hopefully will in future. I also ensured that the opportunity was advertised in Alexandra Park library, so young people in our community could take part and benefit directly.

It was great to see a lot of familiar faces from the construction and built environment sector, and to share ideas about how we can further support our young people.
