I received this sad news from the Friends of Alexandra Park yesterday:
Fallow Deer Herd in Alexandra Park
As you may have seen in the local press, the Alexandra Park and Palace Trust has decided to move the fallow deer herd from the Park to two deer parks in Devon. This is based on advice that the health of the herd is deteriorating.
The latest update can be found here.

When I was a kid (I'm in my50's now), the "deer enclosure" was grassland. Alot of the mothers & kids from this side of the Palace would just go up that far and we'd have picnics there and just generally run around (also in the adjoining woody bit).
That sounds lovely! Also, Grant's idea of a natural (or adventure) playground - but I fear the latter would require a lot of staffing and maintenance, so more commercial ventures would be favoured instead.
My neighbour happened to be in the park when the vet was examining the deer and the vet was happy to talk to him. The deer also had too high levels of lead in their bloodstream. This, apparently, came from the grass in the enclosure. After the last fire (1980?), the burnt out old windows were buried where the deer enclosure is.
My neighbour is devastated the deer are gone, but certain that the decision to move them was in their best interest. I hadn't heard anything about the buried windows and lead in the soil. This, I guess means that no animals can be kept in the enclosure. Does anyone know more?
The deer were moved out today.
Wow that's sudden! The Trust said in a response to the planning application for Go Ape! that having the latter in the football field would necessitate moving the deer out sooner rather than later, because of the resulting stress to the deer. ... I wonder what they have in mind for the ex-deer enclosure. Activities for the Go-Ape visitors when they've finished their half hour in the trees? Food for them? Car park?
Unbelievably quick - can't believe they've gone already. We last saw them in the park on Sunday. Had no idea that was to be the last time, not least as I only found they were leaving last week!
Anyone with Friends of Alexandra Park Calendar will see a couple of them for one last time in September.... https://www.flickr.com/photos/47046427@N03/23047757929/in/album-721...
I went for a walk in Golders Hill park today. They have deer in a similar sized enclosure - was wondering if they’ve had similar problems with the health of their herd? They also have donkeys, maybe donkeys would be happier in Ally Pally!!
Personally speaking, if the animals are going I'd like to see a really excellent children's natural play area!
That's a really good idea!
