Councillor Hearn - Haringey Cabinet Member for the Environment - will put forward a motion arguing that Haringey Council should declare a Climate Emergency - an action taken already by 53 other councils and cities in the UK, and 392 worldwide. The meeting is at the Civic Centre, Wood Green High Road, and starts at 7.30pm.

A deputation from Friends of the Earth will address the council, including some local school students. There will also be a deputation from Lordship Lane School about air pollution.

  • Haringey Council have declared a Climate Emergency, passed unanimously, joining 63 other UK councils and 419 worldwide. They have in addition agreed:

    1. Together as a community and with wider stakeholders, collectively work towards making Haringey carbon neutral by 2030, delivering impact on both production and consumption emissions;
    2. Call on Westminster Government and the GLA family to provide the powers and resources to make the 2030 target possible;
    3. Work with other governments (both within the UK and internationally) to determine and implement best practice methods to limit Global Warming to less than 1.5°C;
    4. Continue to work with partners across London and regions to deliver this new goal through all relevant strategies and plans;
    5. Continue to work with partners across the borough and beyond to deliver this new goal through all relevant strategies and plans;
    6. Report back to Full Council by the end of the year, with a date for the borough to become zero carbon as soon as possible.

    An amendment proposing specific targets was rejected.

    • This is good news but it is disappointing that 'an amendment proposing specific targets was rejected'. I wonder how we can make Haringey carbon neutral without specific targets.

  • I'm glad this is happening. Do you have any idea which other London councils have declared a climate emergency?

    Here's a picture of local young people travelling to the march on Friday morning.

    • How funny this popped up on here - that’s my 15 year old son ! Good job I fully supported  his absenting school to protest otherwise he’d have been caught out here ! He said someone took his photo on the tube . He is indeed local ( Clyde Rd)  and I’m pleased to report he and his peers are passionate about making their voices heard with the aim of forcing big changes . I don’t know numbers but I do know many local kids participated in Friday’s March .

    • I'm delighted to hear that. I dropped a few hints to my son about going but he decided not to - entirely his choice of course. Howeer I was so pleased to see these young people on my way to work on Friday. And lovely to hear your son is a neighbour (I'm on Outram Road).

    • Thanks for this, Brigitte!  Their placards certainly look inspired - that's really great to hear that so many local school students are so involved. I hope you are happy to have the photo on here ...

    • Oh yes I’m happy - anything to raise awareness

    • Kids are so inventive!  I love the dinosaur placard.

      Total number of councils to declare a climate emergency in the UK is now 56 (up from yesterday). As far as I can see, only Lambeth and Lewisham have done so in London - come on, North London! The Mayor has declared an emergency for the whole of London, following a request by the GLA, but he has left the date for reaching zero carbon as 2050, rather than 2030 which the campaigners are pressing for. Others are listed here.

      Does anyone know how many local children took part in the climate strike on Friday?

      Climate emergency declarations in 392 councils cover 34 million citizens
      Populations covered by governments that have declared a climate emergency now exceed 34 million citizens in four English-speaking countries and Switz…
