Nightingale Gardens runs from Bounds Green Road to Station Road and ends opposite Ally Pally station - it's pretty much Ally Pally Park extension!! It's neglected and unloved by Haringey, which seems to have no vision or proposal for improvement. The space has bags of potential but Haringey just won't get its act together. They've even stopped mowing it regularly now. It's widely used, especially by children walking to school, and local people deserve much better. There's now a twitter account, @GdnsNightingale - please follow it, make suggestions and contact @Leopooch (Joanna Christophides)  and @Perayahmet (Ahmet Peray), the relevant councillors, with suggestions.

Thanks

  • I used to walk through on my primary school journey between Outram Road and St Michael's. Neglect of public open space usually means something ominous these days.
  • The twitter feed is now called @GdnsAvenue. please follow!!

  • Thanks for posting - I didn't know that green space was called Nightingale Gardens. I often pass it on the bus and it is really lovely.

    • Hi Susie, thanks so much for your support. It could be lovely but if you take a closer look it's full of dumped rubbish. And now Haringey has even stopped mowing the grass. I think it's time for a bit of investment and TLC!

    • Yes I agree. I had a closer look earlier today and did spot lots of litter. Do you know if anyone has raised it with local councillors at their surgeries?

    • i’ve been raising it for years via email so have now taken to social media in desperation. i guess i could go to a surgery, but am unconvinced it would make any difference. but if someone else could, that would be fabulous!

half the trouble is there’s confusion about whether or not it’s part of nightingale gardens. i’ve now persuaded joanna to confirm once and for all it’s Avenue Gardens tho it’s still under her remit. woodside councillors will have nothing to do with it despite the fact it runs parallel to Park Avenue. If you can add your voice on twitter and encourage others to do the same, would be fab.
    • I love Nightingale/Avenue gardens, having lived in Park Avenue for years, and our daughter went to Nightingale school (as it was then), which gives onto the gardens. It's extraordinary that the Council are proposing to open the old railway line behind Cumberland road to the public in their mega-regeneration plan, with no mention of doing anything about the existing public gardens around there!

The walk from Ally Pally station to the Civic Centre through these gardens is lovely (for all those dates with the Council!).

Sorry, I don't do twitter - is there any other forum for joining the campaign group?

    • Hi Annabel, not at the moment but thanks for getting in touch. The twitter feed is now @GdnsAvenue so would be really grateful if you spread the word. Typical that council spends time and effort on the gardens opposite the civic centre, but out of sight out of mind! Plus Avenue Gardens come under the remit of Bounds Green councillor even though a lot of it borders on Woodside - doesn't help!

    • Yes, I was always amazed at how much of the gardeners' time was spent laying out the display bedding opposite the civic centre - in the form of a clock, if I remember right - haven't checked it out recently!
