Thursday 16th April is NHS Day of Action.

This is to highlight the issues of testing and PPE which are desperately lacking in far too many hospitals and care homes. 52 health workers have died from Covid-19. They have lost their lives as a result of not having enough protection. In New York, healthworkers have staged walk outs and similar protests over the same issues. So tomorrow some frontline health workers have organised walk outs, with those who are not on shift. In normal times we would want to show our solidarity by joining them, which is not possible right now. However, during the NHS Clap at 8pm, please can we shout out for our health service, carers, bus drivers, posties, delivery drivers and other essential workers, without whom the rest of us would be very helpless.

The organisers of the NHS Day of Action have also called for Matt Hancock to resign as the number of deaths is just simply unacceptable. You are asked to take photos and videos during the NHS Clap and post them on Facebook, Twitter #PPENow, #SaveOur Carers #HancockMustGo.

In addition, on Friday morning at 11am, the buses will stop to protest about the lack of PPE. If you live on Alexandra Park Rd on which the 184 operates, please come out to show your support for the bus drivers.

Many thanks

Julie

  • There are other bus routes running through this neighbourhood as well as the 184 - if you live on the 102 and 299 bus routes, do join in the clapping around 11am on Friday! Also perhaps the W3 route.

And of course people who live elsewhere on other routes ...

    • That's amazing! I'll forward this to Joao. Thank you :)

    • That is really lovely to see.

  • Hi Julie,

    Thank you for this.

How do you know about the buses stopping? My husband is a bus driver but knows nothing about it. Could you please point us in the right direction?

    Thanks

    Ana

    • Ana: it is the London area of Unite who are holding a memorial silence at 11.00 tomorrow (Friday). See here.

When we were in Portugal over a month ago the local bus company had already cordoned off the driver's area and people were using the middle doors of the buses.

Unite to honour London’s fallen bus workers during minute’s silence and demands more protections
    • Very welcome news from TfL that from Monday, bus drivers will be cordoned off, and passengers will only enter buses through the middle doors (this was one of the demands of the Unite union). A corollary of this is that bus journeys - only for essential travel, of course -  will be free, because on all buses (now) the card readers are at the front of the bus.

    • Portugal is doing a much better job in general. They even do community testing...

    • And all the local travel was free, for obvious reasons.

    • Oh I see. Thanks, Alex!
