I was sad to receive the following message from one of our neighbourhood's most valued and long-established businesses:
Dear customers,
It is with much sadness that we will be closing on Monday 30th April 2018 as we have been unable to renew the lease.
Please ensure that you collect any items by Monday 30th April.
Many thanks for your valued custom over the years.
Regards
Demos and Zoe
This has come about because Demos and Zoe's landlord has not renewed their lease and has chosen to take over their business. Zoe and Demos have run Palace Gates drycleaners brilliantly for 24 years and we will miss them greatly.

I had a phone call from Zoe earlier today, who wanted to say a big thank you to residents and customers for their wonderful support over the years, and in the lead up to their departure from Palace Gates. Lots of people sent messages and came to see them in the shop before they departed, which was greatly appreciated. Zoe and Demos are well and keeping busy with family and sorting out the garden. The good news is that they are coming to the Palace Gates summer fete on June 17th, so we'll get a chance to see them then.
How very sad! I seem to remember that the landlords claimed - in response to planning objections - that they were going to run the business themselves, having done so in the past. A likely story!
A likely story indeed. That story emerged when the landlords lodged planning applications last year to build tiny flats to rent in a building behind the drycleaners. That development threatened the viability of the drycleaners then and the application was turned down by the council.
