Last weekend was the Big Garden Birdwatch and I sat there with my bird book, note pad and binoculars and recorded just one robin. Did anyone else have almost no birds at all over the hour? It's really worrying how silent things are at the moment. I know it's deep winter but I've put some bird food out in the hope that they will appear when things warm up a bit.

That's disappointing! We did it in the grounds of Muswell Hill Methodist Church and saw a bit more: robins, great tits, long-tailed tits, blackbirds. But not lots in terms of species or numbers of individual birds. I've noticed decline in my (very small) garden too. No blackbirds for years, far fewer sparrows, wrens and great tits. The main reason for the decline of birds across the UK is agricultural practices (to be clear, I'm not blaming farmers). In urban areas, birds are also under great stress from habitat loss (how many front gardens are now tarmac, how many hedges are now fences, how many trees are cut down and not replaced …), increase in the numbers of domestic pets. It's a sad picture.

Thanks Penny, I'm glad you saw a few more birds on the day and I have deliberately not tidied my garden up over winter to help wildlife of all sorts. Better news on the bird front as feeder I set up (too close to the bird count weekend) has now been spotted by various visitors, and I reguarly see blue tits and long-tailed tits feeding. I have also got a swift box and this year will set up swift calls to encourage them to nest.
That's great news about the swift box! We're a downstairs flat so unfortunately can't have one but we see them every year down on Myddleton Road! We donated our feeders to a local school as they were more like squirrell feeders in our garden … ;)
