Jazz at Karamel: Alan Barnes, Kate Williams, Dave Green, Stu Butterfield - 6th April

ALAN BARNES has won the prestigious BBC Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year Award on several occasions, has produced over 40 CDs on his own Woodville label and frequently comperes major Jazz Festivals. He recently featured on the Bryan Ferry “Jazz Age” recording, and on the Great Gatsby film soundtrack. He has extremely busy freelance and teaching schedules, while leading ensembles from Duos to Big Bands.

KATE WILLIAMS is a recipient of the John Dankworth Award For Talent Deserving Wider Recognition, she has gained a distinctive reputation as both a writer and performer.

DAVE GREEN had established himself as a major figure by the end of the 60s having worked with musicians as diverse as Stan Tracey and Humphrey Lyttelton. He also played and recorded with many front-rank visiting Americans who counted themselves fortunate in having his solidity and flair behind them. Throughout the 80s and into the following decades, Green remained at the forefront of British jazz, working with Peter King, Didier Lockwood, Spike Robinson and a host of other British and visiting jazzmen. A superb timekeeper and exceptional soloist, Green is the essence of the international jazz musician.

STU BUTTERFIELD has been a well established and highly regarded drummer on the UK scene since the late sixties. Throughout the past ten years, he has been back with a vengeance performing in a variety of groups and as a regular at Jazz at Karamel!

zerOclassikal: Arani & Akash - March 29

Two talented British musicians present a double bill of exciting classical music on two stringed instruments from the North and South – Veena and SItar.  at Karamel Restaurant.

Akash Parekh is a part of the next generation of exciting British-born sitar players. Having only started learning when he was 18 he has fast progressed into an upcoming musician of the current generation. Based in Leicester, his musical upbringing was initially in western classical and contemporary western music which adds to his innovative playing style.

Arani Sivapathasundaram is a prolific Veena player and emerging artist within London. Her outreach work in spreading awareness of the classical arts has led her to develop her own style to this instrument which enables an audience to delve deeper into the intricacies of the Veena.

Doors open at 7pm and music starts at 8pm

Jazz at Karamel: Threeway - March 30th

Threeway combines two of the UK’s leading players with one of the North’s most experienced bandleader/composers, exploring the subtle and open possibilities of a group without drums. The variety of the original compositions, contributed by all the group members, and the different tone colours created by the instruments ensure a satisfying and well rounded performance. Their interplay creates a natural intensity combined with an acute sensitivity to dynamics.
