Odissi Indian Dance

Please join us on Sunday 19th July at 2.30 to watch a fascinating dance performance given by Katrina at Alexandra Park Library

Odissi dance is considered to be the most lyrical and feminine dance style among other classical dance traditions from India. This dance form takes its origin from Orissa, East of India. The history of Odissi dance has been traced to the early sculptures found in the caves in Udaygiri, and the main positions of the dance are the copies of temple sculptures. Initially Odissi was developing as a temple dance performed by maharis (temple dancers) for the Lord Jagannath; it has also absorbed the influence of the tantric cults that existed in Orissa. Almost extinct during the British Raj, it was reconstructed and reborn in 20th century thanks to the efforts of the great gurus – Kelucharan Mohapatra, Devaprasad Das, Mayudhar Raut and others.

 Katrina Rute is a versatile dancer trained in several Indian classical dance styles. Katya has been teaching and performing internationally and took part in various culture events, workshops and TV shows in the UK, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, Russia and other countries.

Museum of Homelessness will be open from 17 April to 1 November, at the Manor House Lodge, inside Finsbury Park, Seven Sisters Road N4 2DE 12.30-4.30pm.

Illustrating Children’s books, course for adults on Wednesday mornings at The Green Shed, 1 Tetherdown N10, 10-11.30am. April 30 – July 9.

Geekstraveganza – regular boardgame meetup on these dates at Karamel, 4 Coburg Road, Wood Green, 1-6pm.

Em Power fitness classes – Monday and Friday mornings in OR Tambo Rec, 9-9.30am (term time only). The main focus is on core and legs.

Life drawing sessions – alternate Saturdays during term time at Rhodes Avenue Primary School, 1-3pm.

Free Martial Arts and Self-defence for Women and girls for the month of March on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Alexandra Park School.
