During the course, we will explore the world of children’s book illustration, looking at every step of the artistic and narrative process involved in creating a picture book.
The course is open to everyone. Several exercises will focus on the importance of composition, the relationship between text and images, and experimenting with different media.

At the first meeting, we will introduce ourselves, and I will show you my books, original illustrations, sketchbooks, and more.

Please come to the first lesson with a story—perhaps one you have written or a favourite you would like to transform into your own version of a book.

We will then study all the elements of a picture book, working with famous titles as examples, as well as your favourite books.
Next, you will begin developing your characters: experimenting with different media, finding your style, researching references, and creating a character model sheet.

We will explore the importance of creating a storyboard: how to compose pages with words and pictures, set up your storyboard, and create rhythm, pace, and movement.
You will then bring your work to completion by colouring your illustrations with the medium of your choice (watercolour, acrylic, pencils, or digital).

By the end of the course, you will return home with a solid foundation of knowledge that will make you feel more confident in creating your artwork—whether for a contest, a portfolio, a book project to present to a publisher, or simply for your own enjoyment. You will also gain a new way of looking at picture books!
