The Friends of Alexandra Park have monthly talks in the Winter usually on wild life themes. On Wednesday, 20th February, Haringey's new Conservation Officer, Ed Santry will be giving a talk.

This coming Wednesday (blowing my own trumpet), I will giving an illustrated talk on the wild life - mostly the insect life of an area of the Park that the Friends have been actively managing..... This is the email sent out to our members, but all are welcome...

Talk
Everything but the ants -

insects of the Butterfly Meadow

 Wednesday  January 23rd
7.30pm for 8.00pm

This illustrated talk will show you a little of why the Butterfly Meadow is special.

You have probably seen references in our emails and newsletters to ‘the Butterfly Meadow’ which is the focus of our conservation work in the Park. Our aim is to improve the diversity of plants, and therefore insects, in the meadow. We have been working there for around 7 years, and over that time Stephen Middleton has been taking pictures of the insect life seen there.

While ant hills are the distinctive feature of the meadow, the ants will be left for another talk, but Stephen will show us his marvellous pictures of around 20 butterflies, plus moths, beetles and dragonflies that inhabit this area. He will also illustrate the rather unusual child-rearing practices of a bug!

Do join us to see a little of the natural world which lives, often unnoticed, in the park.

Join us for refreshments from 7:30pm, with the talk starting at 8pm prompt.

Space is limited, so please email allyparkn10@gmail.com to book places and we will reply, letting you know the venue.

  • Fascinating talk - I didn't know that Bug is a technical term! Nor had heard of the caring behaviour of the Parent bug, that truly lives up to its name. Then there is the lovely silver-washed Fritillary butterfly - all these, and many other, residents in the Butterfly meadow in Alexandra Park, beautifully photographed by Stephen.
