This Friday - free event at the All Good Bookshop.

Welcome to the world of modern urban poetry!  Anna Robinson, Selina Rodrigues and Ruth Valentine all write about places and scenes we know –  a housing estate, a call centre, Grenfell Tower – with insight and humour and poetic skill.

Anna's third collection, Whatsname Street, tells the story of the estate in Waterloo where she still lives, in the voices and encounters of her predecessors. 

In the shadows and whoops of the last party

she slipped back indoors and took down the curtains,

brown with war and the filth of outside 

The Mother in Law's Nets  

 

Ferocious is Selina's first full-length collection. She explores the world of work and the way we create our lives with and without it.  

With a forest of hair a man

sleeps through this concertina

of noise, a body-length away. 

Loose Change  

 

Ruth's If You Want Thunder centres on a long poem celebrating the imagined lives of the residents of Grenfell Tower.  

In the burning high-rise hive there are alphabets,  

Arabic Tamil Ge’ez, there are apricots 

A Grenfell Alphabet   

Hear how the themes and styles of the three books both merge and contrast, as poems are woven together into a story of contemporary London.  All three poets are published by Smokestack Books, which aims to revive the tradition of radical poetry in the UK.    

Admission free – all welcome. Arrive from 7pm for a 7.30 start

Gi Fumdamentals Course (BJJ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) on Tuesday evenings in May at Alexandra Park School, 7pm.

Museum of Homelessness will be open from 17 April to 1 November, at the Manor House Lodge, inside Finsbury Park, Seven Sisters Road N4 2DE 12.30-4.30pm.

Illustrating Children’s books, course for adults on Wednesday mornings at The Green Shed, 1 Tetherdown N10, 10-11.30am. April 30 – July 9.

Geekstraveganza – regular boardgame meetup on these dates at Karamel, 4 Coburg Road, Wood Green, 1-6pm.

Em Power fitness classes – Monday and Friday mornings in OR Tambo Rec, 9-9.30am (term time only). The main focus is on core and legs.

Life drawing sessions – alternate Saturdays during term time at Rhodes Avenue Primary School, 1-3pm.
