Karamel Music Festival - Celebrating Musical Diversity, tonight we bring you Kevin Fitzsimmons Quartet ft Leon Greening

Wednesday 17th August 2016

Kevin Fitzsimmons – vocals
Leon Greening – keys
Matt Fishwick – drums
Adam King – bass

Long a fan of Mark Murphy and Mel Tormé, London-born Kevin Fitzsimmons is one of most individual male jazz voices to emerge on the UK jazz scene in recent times and already forging a reputation as a charismatic presence and lyricist/songwriter of quality. His current album was released to critical acclaim and he has sold-out with his band at numerous venues around the UK including many times at Ronnie Scott’s, has several jazz festival appearances under his belt, a concert aired on Jazz FM and has sang at Birdland Jazz Club, NYC.

His distinctive vocals have featured in several TV and radio commercials in UK/Europe and, running alongside his career on the jazz scene, he also fronts a touring Big Band concert about Sinatra’s golden period on the Capitol label.

Fitzsimmons’ unstoppably swinging band – described by Jazzwise as “the cream of UK straight-ahead jazz musicians” – keep the audience on the edge of their seats: award-winning pianist Leon Greening (headliner at festivals including Ronnie Scott’s International Piano Trio Festival – “Catch him when you can” says Jazz Journal International); upcoming bassist Adam King (2015 ‘Young Jazz Musician Of The Year’) and respected jazz drummer Matt Fishwick(“Outstanding” – Jazzwise).
Expect a vibrant programme full of taste and verve, featuring sassy new versions of standards by the likes of Mercer, Jobim, Ellington, Legrand, Porter, alongside new jazz arrangements of classic pop/soul recordings – including The Beatles, Sam Cooke, Billy Preston, Paul Weller – and one or two original compositions (including songs co-written by Fitzsimmons with Jools Holland and UK sax great, Derek Nash) all in the space of a relentlessly entertaining set.

“Lovers of jazz vocal mainstream have another star to follow” (Jazzwise)
“Unique interpretations, superb presence, a brilliant gig” (Moreopinions’ Blog at Jazznights)
“Talent, originality, has that rare vocal skill of total control of all he does”(Grapevine Magazine)
“A thoroughbred jazz singer” (Marlbank)

Now this truly is the time to see such highly acclaimed musician as Alan Barnes here at Karamel.

With such a prestigious musical history, we are honoured to welcome Alan back. He is also currently president of the well-attended Swanage Jazz Festival.

Alan studied saxophone, woodwinds and arranging at the Leeds College of music from 1977-80.

In 1980 he moved to London, playing with the Midnight Follies Orchestra and the following year was with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, touring Europe until 1983. In that year he left to join the hard bop band of Tommy Chase where he attracted considerable attention on the UK jazz scene for the first time.

He left Chase in 1986 to co-lead The Jazz Renegades with rock drummer Steve White travelling as far afield as Japan and recording four well received albums. In 1988 Alan was asked to fill the chair recently vacated by Bruce Turner in the Humphrey Lyttelton band where he stayed until 1992. 1987-97 he also found time to lead the Pizza Express Modern Jazz Sextet with Gerard Presencer and Dave O’Higgins. Since leaving the Lyttelton band, Alan has concentrated on his freelance career.

Alan has enjoyed a prolific career as a sideman, playing and recording for many bands. He broadcast regularly over a ten-year period with the BBC Big Band and Radio Orchestra and has toured and recorded with big band leaders, Dick Walter, Kenny Baker, Bob Wilber, Don Weller, Stan Tracey, Mike Westbrook and John Dankworth. Other bands he has toured and recorded with include the Tina May Trio, Bill LeSage’s Genetically Modified Quintet, Spike Robinson’s Tenor Madness, Clare Teale, and a sextet with Don Weller playing the music of Cannonball Adderley. Alan has also toured the U.K. with Freddie Hubbard. Alan has long associations with pianist David Newton, going back to their college days, and with blistering be-bop trumpeter Bruce Adams, with whom he has co-led a quintet since the early nineties.

Alan has been featured on many jazz recordings from his first record date as co-leader in 1985 with Tommy Whittle and as leader of his own quartet in 1987 right up to recent record dates with Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache and Harry Allen and most recently a duo album with Martin Taylor. He has appeared on the Concord (with Conti Condoli), Fret, Miles Music, Nagel Hayer and Specific labels with various projects. He now runs his own Woodville label.

  • Annie and I will kill us with poetry

Gabriel speaks from the heart, see below:

We are passing over our Gabriel and Frank's monthly music and poetry night to female musicians and poets in the music scene. Because there is too much testosterone in the folk/americana/country/blues and jazz scene, because we think the future is not a male patriach power based tough and emotionless turd affair, because we love the voices and songs of our wondrous female artists and because we celebrate womanhood. If you want to perform, send us a message. Night begins at 8pm as usual. The wondrous Gitta de Rider will be hosting this event organised by female singer songwriters too. We are just helping to spread the word. There will be lush vegan food available and all are welcome. xxx

Frank steps in with facts and figures courtesy of The Association of Independent Music:

'Despite notable female successes in the music industry, research has made it clear that we still have a long way to go before we have gender equality.

61% of those working in the music industry are male*
In areas such as management, promotion and the live sector this imbalance increases, with only 30% of the workforce being female**

Research conducted by the Cultural Leadership Programme found that male leaders in the creative industries outnumbered female leaders by two and a half to one in 2009

Women working within the music industry are more likely to have a level 4, or higher, qualification than their male counterparts, but despite this 47% of women working in music earn less than £10,000 per year (compared to 35% of men).**
