From Muswell Hill Sustainability Group:

As part of our plastics campaign, we're delighted to welcome Dr Paula Owen from Green Gumption to talk on the #pointlessplastics campaign that she set up with Karen Sutton of the Global Good Awards.  This campaign started before Blue Planet was shown, and all the subsequent publicity and concern around plastic waste.

#PointlessPlastics calls on everyone in the supply-chain, from consumers to retailers, to showcase either a poor use of plastic, excellent examples of positive change, or a solution to a plastics problem.  The campaign has attracted a lot of attention (the picture is from a BBC News interview Paula did a few months ago).

The talk follows the MHSG AGM at 7pm.

  • Paula is a very lively and inspiring speaker - even about over-use of plastics! I can imagine that she is a great hit with the large assemblies of schoolchildren that she talks to (I think she talks about water-use, rather than plastics - such things as what you shouldn't put down the toilet!).

btw did you know that the trays of black plastic that contain eg fruit and veg in supermarkets are not recyclable, because the scanner cannot identify them? Also other things made of black plastic.

She also pointed out that the cellophane that was used in the past for covering things was biodegradable - clue is in the 'cell' that begins the word, like cellulose. But you cannot get it these days.
    • I'd love her to talk to kids at our local schools - wonder if she's been to APS? They seem to have lots of interesting speakers visiting.
    • Yes, I wondered about that - I think she's working in London at the moment.
