The Friends of Albert Road Recreation Ground 'Wombles' group are asking for willing hands to join them this Saturday (24th October) from 9.30am in the Rec for their next litter pick. They are combining litter picking with some extra tidying up, so grown-ups are VERY welcome. The plan is to reveal the edging stones that define the paths around the Rec - so big children and adults are asked to bring gloves and spades and get stuck into some digging!

Drama at the Palace

Wednesday 14 October 8pm

Drama at the Palace

Victorian Heyday:

The Alexandra Palace Theatre 1873 – 1901

The Alexandra Palace, including its large state of the art Theatre, opened on 24 May 1873 and burnt to the ground 16 days later.

A second Palace was built – including a 3,000-seat Theatre – and reopened in less than two years on 1 May 1875. The Theatre used the most up-to-date technology then available and its wooden stage, with its traps and bridges, is one of the last remaining examples in the country. Its opera and drama productions brought the West End to north London, and its spectacular pantomimes drew full admiring houses. Some of the leading production companies of the age brought top actors, singers, dancers and entertainers to Alexandra Palace.

The story of the Alexandra Palace Theatre is the story of Victorian theatre itself, when theatre, in all its forms from farce to Shakespeare, was the mass entertainment of the growing urban population.

Nigel Willmott and Patricia Brearey, respectively the current Chair and Secretary of the Friends of the Alexandra Palace Theatre, tell us about the performances in the Theatre in the Victorian period, from opera to variety and the keynote pantomimes; and the performers, directors and designers who brought the productions to life.

The talk is at 8pm prompt at URC Hall, corner of Ferme Park Road/Weston Park N8 9PX. Doors open 7.30pm. Visitors welcome. Donation £2 requested.

Tree Walk in Alexandra Park

The walk will cover a relatively natural area of the park, and consider why these particular trees are growing where they are.

We hope that it will also provide an opportunity to enjoy some later autumn colour, and consider how some trees can be identified in autumn purely by their colour. Saturday, 31st October at 2pm.

Meeting at the Newland Road entrance, next to the nursery/playgroup. This is an opportunity for people interested in trees to share their knowledge, rather than an expert-led walk!

IRIS pairs legendary 87-year-old documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades.

More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris' dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire.

Bat Walk in Alexandra Park

Bat numbers in cities seem to be slowly declining, as we seal up the gaps in our house walls and roofs, and knock down old buildings. However we still see plenty of bats in Alexandra Park. If you would like to see them, and hear a bit about bats - what they eat, where they live and what they look like, please join us on Wednesday, September 23rd at 6:45pm.

You need to register, so email allyparkn10@gmail.com stating how many people you would like to book for, and I will email back the details of where to meet. The walk is free, and will last until about 8pm.

Big Green Bookshop have been raising money and collecting books to donate to the "Jungle Library" in the Calais refugee camp.
So far, we've raised over £2,500 and we have a ton load of books kindly donated by people from all over the country. We're still getting around twenty parcels a day with books to take to Calais.

Here are three things;

  1. We need help sorting the books out. If you are free tomorrow (Thursday) and can spare an hour or two, please get in touch. 020 8881 6767.
  2. We spoke to Mary Jones, the person looking after the Library and she is currently in the position where she's got plenty of fiction and kids books (in English) at the library. A lot of what's been donated is fiction and kids stuff, so we suggested to her that we have a mammoth sale of all the second hand stuff we've got and add that to the money that we're raising for her. She LOVED this idea, so we are having a....
PAY WHAT YOU LIKE ON ALL OUR SECOND HAND BOOKS

>From Friday 18th September until Sunday 20th September

you can choose up to 6 books and pay as little as 1p for each (YOU MONSTER). You could pay a tenner for each too, but that's up to you.
We have well over 3,000 secondhand books here all looking to go to good homes.
We're hoping for sunny few days so that we can get the tables and boxes outside.
     3. I'm going to Calais on Monday 21st September to deliver the books we have and also to meet Mary and to give her some dosh. We've persuaded the lovely people at ZIPCAR to let us have a van, and we've (I think) persuaded the BBC to let us borrow a camera, so we can film our journey. Neither Tim or I drive, but the lovely Mark White, aka MarkyMarket is very kindly giving up his time and is going to help me get the books to Calais.

This is all very exciting and I can't wait to meet Mary. Our aim is for this not to be a one-off thing. We'd like to keep our link with the library in Calais and continue to work with  Mary to ensure that at the very least, there is always a well stocked library at the camp.

Thank you.
Simon at Big Green Bookshop
