Muswell Hill Sustainability Group is has arranged its 9th Green Open Homes programme this October will be wider-ranging than ever, with new properties to visit in person over the weekends of  1st-2nd and 7th-8th October, and a series of Tuesday evening talks (also livestreamed for those unable to attend in person) kindly hosted by Muswell Hill Methodist Church.

There's a free Green Open Homes event for you!

Online there'll be weekday evening virtual tours, and talks on low-cost energy saving and principles of retrofitting a home - dates to be confirmed soon. Including:

In-person visits to 6 homes in Muswell Hill, Highgate and Tottenham, and the cob and timber roundhouse
at Meadow Orchard community garden and orchard in Crouch End.  Also an online visit to an Edwardian home and a green roof installation.  All details are on

A series of Tuesday talks 4th-25th October:-

Four talks to help you wise up on the big picture influencing energy prices and how to take action in your own home and keep costs down.  The first three are in-person at Muswell Hill Methodist Church and also livestreamed; the fourth and final is online only.

Tuesday 4th October, 7.30pm - Talk: Why Has The Price Of Energy Shot Up? 
Professor Mark Barrett of University College London on the impact of recent geo-political events on gas and electricity prices.

Tuesday 11th October, 7.30pm - Talk: Home Retrofit Essentials
Dermot Barnes of MHSG and en10ergy on how to improve the energy efficiency of a flat or house - where to start, what to prioritise, best value interventions and how to navigate the complexities.

Josie Evetts from Ecofurb on their service, including Whole House Plans.


Tuesday 18th October, 7.30pm - Talk: Easy Energy-Saving At Home
Interactive talk by Alex Hartley of Energias on what we can all do to save energy - apples to tenants and homeowners alike.

Tuesday 25th October - Online talk - Architects' Insights on Local Deep Retrofits
Natalie Black of Enbee Architecture and Design and Jeremy Stacey of Jeremy Stacey Architects talk about their deep retrofit projects in Muswell Hill.

  • I wonder why the show homes have wood burners? They are intense sources of particle pollution - even worse than cars. @mumsforlungs has a lot of information about that.
    I also could not find any information on plug-in solar panels for smaller spaces such as balconies and sheds and gardens. They are all the rage in Germany - but it's difficult to find any information, let alone building specialists, who can inform and deal with that. Can you help?
    • Completely agree about wood burners.
