In March we had a committed group of litter pickers who made an excellent start on clearing litter from the ditch around the sports field. But there is more to do!

This Saturday morning, April 23rd, we will continue to scour the bushes and brambles to remove the bottles, bags and packets that have been blown there over the winter....

Please turn up and help to clear the rubbish before the brambles grow and hide it again.
We will provide the gloves and bags - you provide the hands.

Meet at the "Gas Hut" (the little brick building by the Bedford Road entrance to the Park) at 10.30am The Park is still pretty wet in places, so do wear boots or suitable shoes. We will finish by noon.

Wood Green Animal Charity are offering the following at their London Shelter, 601 Lordship Lane N22 5LG from 3pm to 5pm on Wednesday 20th April:-
Bring your cat along for a £5 health check and also check that your cat's microchip contact details up to date.

Plus they will microchip your cat for only £5 on the day.

It's important to get pets microchipped and neutered and they will also give advice on neutering.

‘Searching for Victor Hember’, a presentation by Hugh Garnsworthy, his wife Ruth (maiden name Hember) and son Christopher. Victor Hember went missing in action on the first day (1st July 1916) on the Somme. The presentation is based on letters written by him and his family in an effort to find out what happened to him.

Just to say this is the last day to book a ticket for the beginners' floristry workshop to be held at Nati's Café on Priory Road this Thursday evening.  Tania McLaren of Muswell Hill's www.thekitchentableflorist.co.uk will be stocking up with gorgeous Spring flowers from the Covent Garden Flower Market.  At the workshop she will be demonstrating how you select and prepare the flowers and make them into a hand-tied bouquet to take home with you at the end of the evening.  A great skill for a perfect gift.  Tickets cost £37 including all the flowers and materials plus a free glass of prosecco.  Doors open at 8pm.  The workshop is at 8.30pm for one hour.  Book your ticket here

Fungi Walk Sunday April 17th 2.30pm

Autumn is not the only time to go out looking for fungi. You will be surprised how many fungi are to be found lurking in the woods in Alexandra Park at this time of year.

Local expert Andy Overall will be on hand to identify each specimen we find, explain why it grows in a particular environment, and most importantly tell us whether it would not be a good idea to eat it.

There is a new project to regenerate the old Bowling Green in Albert Road Recreation Ground (behind the Pavilion cafe). We are in the process of giving this space a new lease of life so that there can be free access to the community over the coming months.  This will be a space for everyone to use, bowls is a great game whatever your age or ability, and there is no dress code required!

Before we can open up, we would welcome help for any willing volunteers to drop by Sunday 17th April 2016 between 11.00-1.00 to help clear up the grounds, gardens and some of the buildings, especially after a recent fire in one of the huts. All equipment will be provided, and if you have your own gardening gloves feel free to bring those with you (but not essential).

We can then look forward to welcoming you from 1st May for a summer of Bare-foot bowling, and fun for all the family!

12pm – Imagination Station Puppets’ Pirate Party!
Travel back in time with the Imagination Station Puppets back to the time of the Pirates, set sail with us as the hapless and hatless Captain searches for his pirate treasure with his crew of jolly pirates, mermaids and the odd sea monster.

1pm – Learn to Hula Hoop with MeelyHoops!
Meelyhoops will bring hoops-a-plenty to get you spinning and playing in colourful circles. We turn the hoop into whatever we can imagine – steering wheel of a hoopy car, the sunshine, a bowl of hoopy porridge – get your imaginations going – we might even make a hoopy story!

2pm – Mrs H and Her Singalong Band
Mrs H joins us with her intoxicating brand of family music to Karamel. Packed with lots of songs you can sing along and dance to – all generations can join along with the fun!

3pm – Yana Stajno Art Workshop
Join in for some fun art workshops with fine artist Yana Stajno – packed full of colour with lots of chances to draw whatever your imagination tells you to!

3:30pm – Mike Dodsworth Storytelling
Join in for some tales from around the world with Mike Dodsworth – lots of participation guaranteed and stories to make your summer’s day even brighter!

This Thursday, 7th April, multi-award winning Alan Barnes performs alongside some of his favourite musicians and peers. Joining Alan is established and longtime pianist John Critchinson, established bassist Dave Green and Stu Butterfield on drums.

A prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and touring soloist – we can’t wait to see what Alan brings to our Jazz at Karamel nights. Best known for his work on clarinet, alto and baritone sax, his unique musicianship, indefatigable touring, and warm rapport with audiences have made him uniquely popular in British jazz. He has received over 25 British Jazz Awards, most recently in 2014 for clarinet, and has twice been made BBC Jazz Musician of the Year.

Supporters of Alexandra Park Library invite you to join them for an evening of entertainment with the HORNSEY TRIO playing BLUES, FOLK AND JAZZ. On Monday 25th April 2016 at 5.30pm-6.30pm at Alexandra Park Library, Alexandra Park Rd, London N 22 7UJ

We are meeting this Saturday 2nd April to work on the Crescent Rise/Albert Road flower beds.
 
In addition to weeding, we will be planting shrubs to replace the roses and the shrubs that suffered in the dry months last year.  We will be adding colour with annuals and summer bulb planting.
 
Please come and give hand between 11-1.00.  We are always in need of help, especially this Saturday as some of our regulars are on holiday.

We are passing over our Gabriel and Frank's monthly music and poetry night to female musicians and poets in the music scene. Because there is too much testosterone in the folk/americana/country/blues and jazz scene, because we think the future is not a male patriach power based tough and emotionless turd affair, because we love the voices and songs of our wondrous female artists and because we celebrate womanhood. If you want to perform, send us a message. Night begins at 8pm as usual. The wondrous Gitta de Rider will be hosting this event organised by female singer songwriters too. We are just helping to spread the word. There will be lush vegan food available and all are welcome. xxx

Research conducted by the Cultural Leadership Programme found that male leaders in the creative industries outnumbered female leaders by two and a half to one in 2009

Women working within the music industry are more likely to have a level 4, or higher, qualification than their male counterparts, but despite this 47% of women working in music earn less than £10,000 per year (compared to 35% of men).**

Friends of Alexandra Park Bat Walk Wednesday 6 April 7.30pm

Despite the gales and rain, temperatures are rising, and that has brought bats out of hibernation, keen to feast on all the flying insects they can find. If you would like to see them, and hear a bit about bats - what they eat, where they live and what they look like, join in on Wednesday evening, April 6th at 7.30pm.

You need to register, so email allyparkn10@gmail.com stating how many people you would like to book for, and we will email back the details of where to meet. Please include a phone number so that we can let you know if, because of bad weather, the walk has to be cancelled.
The walk is free, and will last until about 8.30 pm.
