Make Votes Matter is a cross-party campaign to introduce Proportional Representation to the House of Commons by 2021, led by democratically-organised activists in a united movement for electoral reform.

We are holding a meeting to discuss practical local ways to help reform the UK voting system. We believe our current system is undemocratic.

You are invited to our Annual General Meeting on Thursday 19th of May at 7:30pm in the Park Information Centre in The Grove. As it is 10 years since the Friends group was formed, we would like to take a quick look back at what we have achieved and then hear from our guest speaker, Louise Stewart, the Chief Executive of the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust.   Louise will tell us about current and future plans for the Palace and Park.

As in previous years this is also a good opportunity to discuss with you the direction we should take in future. We can  talk about how we would like to see the Park develop in the future.  What should it look like? What activities should be taking place there? How do we best enhance the environment of the Park?  We want to hear your views.

We will also hold the necessary elections for our committee.  The Friends is continuing to grow its membership and activities because of the great work of the volunteers who operate the Park Information Centre, organise activities, and put out information.  With more volunteers we could do more.  There is a wide variety of one-off tasks or more regular assistance which would make a big difference. If you would like to become more involved with the Friends, the AGM is a good opportunity to offer your help, or drop us an email before the meeting if you would like to talk about what you might do.

And we will have a little celebration of our 10th anniversary. Do come along!

The meeting will be in the Londesborough Room at Alexandra Palace, entered from the Palm Court, with welcome refreshments at 7pm and the meeting starting at 7.30pm.

Building work has just commenced on the Theatre renovation and Louise will be talking about how the regeneration is progressing and her vision for the future of the Theatre, which is scheduled to reopen in 2018, and the Palace.

The meeting is open to the public, who will be welcome to join the Friends of Alexandra Palace Theatre at the event if they wish. The Friends are also looking to recruit new members to their committee, so if you are interested in Theatre and the Arts, and/or have some experience in looking after a Friends membership scheme, then do come along and let them know your interest. Spring Tree Walk

Friends of Alexandra Park Spring Tree Walk

Saturday May 7th 2pm

Trees in Groups

...
This walk will focus on the various groups of trees on the South Slope. Why were trees planted in groups in the first place, and what impressions were the particular species chosen intended to convey? How have they been managed over the years, and how far has nature subverted the original scheme? And what might be done in future to restore or improve the present groves? This walk will encourage the participants to think about the design and management of trees in parks, and particularly those on Alexandra Palace’s fine south facing slopes.

Meet at the BBC Tower at 2 pm.

Bird Walk

Bird Walk Sunday May 1st 8am

Alexandra Park is home to many birds, and what better to do on May Day than get out into the Park to look at them. On Sunday morning Gareth, one of our local experts, will be helping us to identify anything we spot, and Gerry our local bird ringer, will be explaining what bird ringing is all about, and giving us the chance to see a few birds very close-up.

Do bring binoculars if you have them, and suitable footwear.

The walk is free, and there is no need to book - just meet at 8 am on Sunday in The Grove Car Park. The walk will take a couple of hours, although there is the opportunity to carry on longer if you wish.
