Rye Spirits - talk by Annabel Gregory

Please join us at Alexandra Park Library for an illustrated talk by local author Annabel Gregory, whose book Rye Spirits tells the (true) story of a witchcraft case from Rye in Sussex.

The talk will focus on a strong-willed woman who does not fit the the 17th century image of women  as the 'weaker sex'. A local healer, she was accused of witchcraft by some of the merchant elite in Rye, Sussex, who found her a threat for several different reasons ...
The massive dossier of evidence for the case tells us much about the life and even speech of people at the time. The spirits of the title range from fairies playing pranks on the inhabitants of Rye, to angels announcing the impending apocalypse.

Tuesday 29th September 2015

5.30 – 6.30pm

At Alexandra Park Library.

Talkies, Palmers Green’s community cinema, has had BAFTA award winners and Oscar nominees amongst those contributing the “talk” to a film evening. This coming Wednesday (17th) at The Fox, before watching the film HER about a man and his computer, the audience will be hearing from Talkies’ most distant visiting speaker to date. Having recently moved from the Chair of Psychology at the University of Aberdeen, Mike Burton is now Professor of Psychology at the University of York.

We’re often led to believe that computers’ Artificial Intelligence will very soon leave humans standing. Often working with police, security services and passport authorities worldwide Mike will use a fun, audience interactive session to highlight who is top-dog in our evolving relationship with machines. Who do you think? Film and bar too.
